Alpha-fetoprotein levels in amniotic fluids from spontaneous abortions.
Alpha-fetoprotein (A.F.P.) levels in the amniotic fluid were determined in 54 cases of spontaneous abortion in which the amniotic sac remained intact. These levels were correlated with the morphological and cytogenetic status of the fetus. Of the 29 fetuses with no apparent abnormality 22 had A.F.P. levels below 50 mug/ml, while 10 of the 11 fetuses with severe neural tube defects had raised le...
متن کاملLevels of alpha-fetoprotein in amniotic fluids of mice (curly-tail) with neural tube defects.
Mutant curly-tail mice are genetically predisposed to produce offspring with neural tube defects. Estimation of alpha-fetoprotein in the amniotic fluid of fetuses of these mutants has shown that the levels are raised in fetuses with exencephaly and open spina bifida. This suggests that these mice are a valid model for studies of the aetiology and genesis of neural tube defects in man.

Amniotic fluid (AF) is essential for fetal development and maturation during pregnancy. The levels of proteins in AF have been determined in many studies to screen for potential biomarkers of pregnancy-associated abnormalities. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a major AF and plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the liver during the fetal period. APF serum concentrations are commonly used for s...
متن کاملSerum alpha-fetoprotein levels in healthy Japanese adults.
With advances in lectin affinity electrophoresis of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), the detection of significant changes in serum AFP at low levels in cirrhotics has become important for early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma. Serum AFP levels of 616 healthy individuals without abnormal liver function tests or virus markers of hepatitis B and C were determined by enzyme immunoassay with IMx-AFP D...
متن کاملSerum alpha-fetoprotein levels in acute viral hepatitis.
Serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were measured serially by radioimmunoassay in 32 patients with acute viral hepatitis. With one exception, the levels were increased during the course of the illness. Raised concentrations of the protein occurred almost equally in patients with and without the hepatitis-B antigen. In the majority of patients the rise was modest but in seven levels were reached at w...
